Homeowner planning

Choose the care routine along with the deck color.

Deck boards can look similar in a small photo and ask very different things of you over time. Compare the exact product, its care instructions and the whole installed scope before choosing. The material groups below are planning examples; ask Brewers Homes which options fit your project.

Material groupCare to discussWhat to compare before choosing
Pressure-treated woodPlan for cleaning, inspection and finish or water-repellent care suited to the actual lumber and coating.Ask when the wood is ready for the selected finish, how that finish is maintained, and what normal weathering looks like. Do not use a one-size-fits-all recoat schedule.
Capped compositeStill needs cleaning. Care depends on the brand, collection and generation; current and older boards can have different instructions.Ask which cleaner and brush are allowed, how spills/debris should be handled, and whether a pressure washer is permitted for the exact board. Low maintenance does not mean no maintenance.
PVC deckingFollow the particular PVC product’s cleaning instructions. Do not assume a wood or composite cleaning method is suitable.Compare actual product guides, brush/cleaner requirements, sample color and texture, and the conditions where the board will be installed.

Ask for the exact product name.

Keep the board collection, railing model and applicable care guides with your project paperwork. For example, Trex separates current high-performance cleaning guidance from early-generation products. TimberTech also gives different brush guidance for its Composite and Advanced PVC collections. These references illustrate why exact product identification matters; they do not identify the brands installed on Brewers projects. Sources: Trex care and cleaning and TimberTech care and cleaning

Compare the whole estimate.

  • Decking surface, framing scope, railing, stairs, trim and site work.
  • Material and installation requirements, including the condition of an existing structure where relevant.
  • Initial installed cost plus the care tasks you expect to perform or hire out.
  • Product warranty documents and any separate workmanship terms actually offered. Ask what is covered, excluded and required for a claim.

Take samples into your yard.

  • Look at a full sample in sun and shade rather than relying on a thumbnail.
  • Compare texture, visible joints and railing/trim combinations.
  • Ask about the product’s suitability for your exposure and intended use; do not assume every collection performs the same way.
  • Ask for specific guidance around grills, furniture feet and other items you plan to put on the surface.

Keep the care plan realistic.

Make a short checklist for the chosen product: debris removal, cleaning, periodic visual inspection and any finish work. Keep it beside the manufacturer’s guide. If the board name or care instructions are unknown on an existing deck, identify them before applying a cleaner or using a pressure washer.
